Representative Falzone and Senator McGee Applaud Success of Reconstruction of Peabody Route One Jughandle
Representative Mark Falzone and Senator Thomas McGee complimented the Highway Division on the success of the reconstruction of the Peabody Route 1 jughandle. The recent renovations, which include modifications to traffic signal equipment and a widening of the roadway, have significantly alleviated the traffic at this heavily used junction. These new adjustments have provided a second lane at the jughandle specifically for left turns. Since many motorists use the Peabody jughandle to reverse direction on Route 1 or to access Route 128, this turnaround has become a nuisance for commuters across the North Shore. Although the reconstruction will not completely eliminate traffic congestion in the area, it is expected to significantly lessen the pressure experienced at this light. Representative Falzone remarked, “I am extremely pleased with the outcome of this vital project. Officials from all levels of government collaborated to accomplish this goal and to see the project reach fruition. These long awaited improvements will greatly improve the flow of traffic along Route 1 and benefit countless drivers. For the many of us who use this road daily, this reconstruction is something we can all celebrate.” Senator McGee commented, “This project should alleviate some of the traffic congestion along Route 1 in Saugus. I am happy that Mass Highway and local officials were able to address this issue in such a timely fashion. Additionally, Saugus resident John Truesdale’s continued involvement helped move this important project forward.” When constituents expressed their problems with the troublesome jughandle, local politicians and officials rapidly responded. Many Saugus residents, including John Truesdale, now-retired Saugus Police Lieutenant Stephen Sweezy, and Saugus Fire Chief Jim Blanchard, voiced their concerns to the Massachusetts Highway Department. The department in turn contacted Representative Falzone and Senator McGee, who then attended a critical meeting to discuss plans for the project. As a result of their joint efforts, construction on the Peabody jughandle proceeded swiftly. “A lot of the traffic in Saugus is the result of that light,” commented John Truesdale, whose efforts on the project contributed significantly to its success. “It should help a bit. I appreciate the help of Senator McGee and Representative Falzone on getting this work done.” "I would like to give the Highway Division a special congratulations and “atta boy” for their performance on the Peabody jughandle on Route 1,” said Larry Mazzarella, who also worked on furthering the project. “The traffic does seem to flow much smoother than before the changes. Also, I would like to give my thanks to Representative Falzone, Senator McGee, Lieutenant Sweezey and Chief Blanchard. I am sure their influence helped.” Official construction began in the spring and drew to a close in the late summer. With the completion of this project, thousands of Massachusetts drivers are set to enjoy the benefits of a speedier commute.
